    Phase sensitive detection of dipole radiation in a fiber-based high numerical aperture optical system

    We theoretically study the problem of detecting dipole radiation in an optical system of high numerical aperture in which the detector is sensitive to \textit{field amplitude}. In particular, we model the phase sensitive detector as a single-mode cylindrical optical fiber. We find that the maximum in collection efficiency of the dipole radiation does not coincide with the optimum resolution for the light gathering instrument. The calculated results are important for analyzing fiber-based confocal microscope performance in fluorescence and spectroscopic studies of single molecules and/or quantum dots.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

    Music is a form of leadership. Music-based interventions in organizations and society are being used throughout the world, including in situations of extreme conflict and consequence. Artists are going beyond the dehydrated language of economics, politics, and war to achieve goals that have eluded those using more traditional approaches. This article presents musical interventions in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cyprus, Estonia, Northern Ireland, the Middle East, South Africa, the United States, and Venezuela, in which musicians have had the inspiration and courage to make a difference.T=The radical shift in the structure of the world begs for creativity; it asks us to rethink who we are as human beings… It may be that writers, painters, and musicians have an unprecedented opportunity to be co-creators with society’s leaders in setting a path. For art, after all, is about rearranging us, creating surprising juxtapositions, emotional openings, startling presences, flight paths to the eternal. —Rosamund and Benjamin Zander (1998, p. 7)2Art transforms apathy into action.3 Social scientist Ken Gergen (1999) invites us all to become “poetic activists” (p. 12). Perhaps there is no better label for the use of musical interventions in global and organizational crises than that of poetic activism. Activists, great artists, and great leaders share three fundamental perspectives (Adler, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2015). They all demonstrate the courage to see reality the way it is. They all exhibit the courage to imagine possibility—positivefutures—even when the world labels such imagination as naïve for daring to express optimism. And they all have the courage to inspire people to move from current reality back to possibility.Over the past half-century, with no singular organized movement or unifying philosophy to guide them, artists and artistic processes have attempted to transform reality in numerous contentious situations. In particular, music has been used to address extreme conflict and the threat of conflict, along with the dysfunction and degradation that conflict so often causes (see Tongeren, 1999; Urbain, 2008; Ippolito, 2008).4 Music, most often when combined with other approaches, appears to have produced generative outcomes in some, although not all, situations in which it has been introduced. In many circumstances, musical interventions have inspired the broader community (see Tongeren, 1999; Welch & LeBaron, 2006; Ippolito, 2008; Cohen, Gutiérrez Varea, & Walker, 2011). Such initiatives exemplify the frame-breaking perspectives and approaches that music has the potential to offer

    Parent Interaction In Primetime Family Themed Television Portrayals: A Replication And Extension Of Dail And Way\u27s (1985) Content Analysis

    This research is a replication and extension of Dail and Way’s (1985) content analysis identifying parent interactions portrayed in family oriented prime time network television programs. Family structure, parent role, child rearing, and child responses were coded from five episodes each of eight different programs from 2014-2015 television season. The programs presented parent roles more often than child rearing, while mothers were found in child rearing more often than fathers. Traditional family structures were most prevalent with fewer single parent households and a new presence of same-sex parents. Mothers and fathers were still portrayed stereotypically, but children’s responses were more realistic and further reinforced traditional gender roles. Child responses reinforced traditional and rejected non-traditional parent interactions according to the parents’ sex, partnership, and occupation

    Improving angle stability by switching shunt reactors in mixed overhead cable lines. An Italian 400 kV case study

    Stringent environmental constraints make the construction of new transmission overhead lines more and more difficult. Alternatively, today it is possible to use cable lines for high (HV) and extra-high (EHV) voltage systems. The configuration of the so-called mixed lines can create some problems in the operation of the electrical system, both during steady-state and transient conditions. In particular, the system stability is one of the main concerns when analyzing the dynamic response of power systems. In this paper, the study of angular stability of a system containing a mixed line is presented: a specific control logic applied to the shunt reactors of the mixed line is proposed as improvement of the overall system stability. The proposed switching logic is first discussed from a theoretical point of view and validated with two different testing systems. Then, the existing overhead-cable lines connecting Sicily to the rest of continental Europe 400 kV power system are taken as case study for the application of the proposed switching strategy. Several simulations are performed in the power system analysis software NEPLAN360: the results show the fundamental role of the timing of the control actions applied on the shunt reactors in helping the system to keep the stability. The proposed control proves to be an effective support to the system subjected to critical contingencies, contributing decisively to avoid the angular separation between areas and therefore to preserve the stability of the system

    Analysis and simulations of the primary frequency control during a system split in continental europe power system

    The occurrence of system separations in the power system of Continental Europe has been observed in recent decades as a critical event which might cause power imbalances higher than the reference incident specified per system design, representing an actual challenge for the stability and safe operation of the system. This work presents an analysis and simulations of the primary frequency control in the Continental Europe synchronous area in conditions of system separation. The adopted approach is based on fundamental aspects of the frequency-containment reserve process. The analysis takes an actual event into consideration, which determined the separation of the system in January 2021. The main purpose of the work is the development of specific models and simulations able to reproduce the actual split event. Due to specific arrangements discussed in detail, it is possible to obtain a substantial match between the simulations and the frequencies registered after the system split. The work also provides insight into the importance of the temporal sequence of power imbalances and defensive actions in the primary frequency control process. The models developed in the work are finally used to investigate the separation event under different operating conditions, such as missing defensive actions and low inertia scenarios

    A diagrammatic derivation of the meson effective masses in the neutral color-flavor-locked phase of Quantum Chromodynamics

    We offer a diagrammatic derivation of the effective masses of the axial flavor excitations in the electrical and color neutral CFL phase of QCD. In particular we concentrate on the excitations with the quantum numbers of the kaons: we show how their effective chemical potentials, responsible of their Bose-Einstein condensation and found previously on the basis of pure symmetry arguments, arise at the microscopic level by loop effects. We perform also the numerical evaluation of the relevant loops in the whole CFL regime Ms2/2μΔ1M_s^2/2\mu\Delta\leqslant 1, showing the existence of the enhancement of the kaon condensation with respect to the lowest order result.     Self-consistent evaluation of quark masses in three flavor crystalline color superconductivity

    We present a self-consistent evaluation of the constituent quark masses in the three flavor Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) phases of QCD, employing an improved Nambu-Jona Lasinio model. This result allows to determine the window for values of the baryonic chemical potential where the LOFF state is energetically favored.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, JHEP3 style.
